Meet Chami Murmu from Jharkhand.
A grassroots environmental leader who transformed a small community effort into a movement that restored forests and created opportunities for thousands of women.

Through the women-led collective Sahyogi Mahila Bagrasai, Chami brought women together to plant trees, rebuild ecosystems, and create sustainable livelihoods. Over the last 36 years, more than 30 lakh trees have been planted, earning her the title of Jharkhand’s “Lady Tarzan.”

Her story is not just about protecting forests, it is about women finding leadership, financial independence, and identity through collective action and care for their environment.
