Monowara lives by the riverbank in Amadi Union, Bangladesh. When floods arrive, water fills everything, and snakes climb into anywhere dry, including homes.

Today, Monowara and her community are planting mangroves. As the trees grow, they will hold back floodwater, storms, and heavy rain. And they will give wildlife space to return to the forest, and families the safety to stay in their homes.

Sometimes, protection begins with roots in the ground.
