The Maharashtra government is all set to announce a set of fresh guidelines to curb the coronavirus spread. Will there be another lockdown? And more importantly is India in the middle of a second wave of the coronavirus? Centre has fast tracked emergency approval for foreign-produced COVID-19 vaccines that have been granted similar clearances in other countries.
A total of 1,61,736 new Covid-19 cases have been reported on Tuesday, pushing India’s tally of cases to 1,36,89,453, according to data updated by the Health Ministry. The number of people who have recovered from the disease stands at 1,22,53,697, while the case fatality rate has dropped further to 1.25 per cent, the data stated. 13,10,90,000 doses to states and Union Territories have been provided so far. On one hand, we have states like Kerala where there is zero wastage (of vaccine) and on the other hand, we have several other states where there still is 8-9% of wastage. And a state like Uttar Pradesh reported the highest-ever single-day spike of 18,021 coronavirus cases on April 13, 2021.
Sputnik V, the vaccine against Covid-19 developed by Russia, has been cleared for emergency use by the Drugs Controller General of India, the country’s drug regulator. An expert panel recommended it for emergency use in India. It is now the third coronavirus vaccine to get emergency use approval, after Covishield (Serum Institute of India) and Covaxin (Bharat Biotech).
