Shaktikanta Das, former finance secretary, a vocal supporter of demonetisation, has been appointed the 25th governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for three years
The new appointment happened after Urjit Patel quit abruptly amid a bitter dispute over the regulator’s autonomy
The Government began the selection process soon after Patel’s resignation.
Shaktikanta Das is the first bureaucrat (IAS) to head the central bank in almost five years.
Das has numerous important issues to work on.
He will first have to work on normalising the relationship between the central bank and the government who differ on many issues
Another important issue that Das has to tackle is the finalization of members of the committee that will study the RBI capital’s framework.
