India's first indigenous antibody test for COVID-19, 'COVID Kavach Elisa' is ready for production

It has been developed by the Pune-based National Institute of Virology

Health Minister Dr Harshvardhan said this will play a critical role in surveillance of proportion of the population exposed to the virus.

The ELISA - enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay - antibody test is a kind of blood test

ELISA kits are similar to rapid antibody tests, which detect antibodies in the blood to find out if an individual was infected with COVID-19 infection or not

According to ICMR officials, ELISA kit is more reliable and cheaper than rapid antibody testing kits.

According to the union health ministry, ELISA has a sensitivity of 92% and its specificity is 97%.

The test also has the advantage of being able to evaluate 90 samples together within 2.5 hours
