Why did we burn so many farm fires in 2020?
In the last 2 months, over 74,000 farm fires were observed in Punjab compared to 44,000 in 2019 and 57,000 in 2018. Tracking data and mapping an interventions targeting those areas that need more attention to reduce the incidence of stubble burning. Historical trend in farm fires also informs us how the practice has evolved over time. Historical trends also help us in deconstructing the need to understand the extent and impact or farm fires and demarcate regions that may progress from burning to zero burn status. A closer look at what works and what doesn’t work in these regions can help in replicating such models to other villages to help our farmers.
