ThermalR is converting three-wheeler auto-rickshaws, also known as Tuk Tuks, into electric vehicles for people belonging to lower-income households. They have received a grant from UNDP and are planning to convert around 208 Tuk Tuks in the country into electric.  Additionally, they have retrofitted 200 units for middle-income households. They also plan to launch electric motorbikes which are still in the research and development stage.

In 2013, Prof Sasiranga De Silva started developing an interest in renewable energy as electric vehicles were entering the market.
