Kumbh Mela, also known as Kumbha Mela, is a religious festival in Hinduism that is celebrated four times over 12 years, with the site of observance rotating between four pilgrimage locations along four sacred rivers—at Haridwar on the Ganges, at Ujjain on the Shipra, at Nashik on the Godavari, and at Prayagraj at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Sarasvati. Each site’s celebration is based on a distinct set of astrological positions of the Sun, the Moon, and Jupiter, with the holiest time occurring at the exact moment when these positions align. The Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj, in particular, attracts millions of pilgrims. Additionally, a Great Kumbh Mela festival is held every 144 years at Prayagraj. The 2019 festival attracted approximately 150 million people.
