The Devipujak community has been walking long distances collecting used clothes providing utensils in return, since the early 19th century. These ‘invisible recyclers’ have managed to carry forward their tradition of circular economy to the high paced age of internet, but not without difficulties.
The Sustainability Show's sixth episode focuses on the Bombay Recycling Concern, which helps them overcome those challenges and promote a culture of upcycling old clothes. Co-founded by Vinod Nindrojiya, the organisation provides them with used clothes in bulk, which provides a month's work for a family. This saves their time spent roaming around, allowing them to spend more time with their families. The show promotes recycling/upcycling as a means of sustainable living, and encourages the older practice of mending old clothes to reuse them.
