“We once feared the pude kudo, thinking it would attack us. But when I met it, I realised it was the red panda; shy, gentle, and beautiful.” In the forests of eastern Nepal, Prem Dorje Sherpa grew up hearing myths about a mysterious creature. Years later, as a forest guardian with the Red Panda Network, he discovered the truth and a mission. With communities and the Mountains to Mangroves project, they are now restoring malingo bamboo forests, vital for the red panda’s survival. Over 45,000 trees have been planted, bringing back green cover, livelihoods, and balance to the fragile mountain ecosystem. By protecting the red panda’s home, they’re also protecting their own.
